Who Leads The World In Auto Production? Who Are The New Big Three?

There was a time, not so long ago, when the big three car manufacturers meant Ford, GM and Dodge. There was almost no competition so whatever the big boys produced, sold…and sold well. The absence of competition resulted in complacency and some of the stuff Detroit rolled out was pure garbage. Quality was second place to manufacturing.

Fast-forward forty years. The automotive industry has changed significantly. Gone are the days of sub-standard manufacturing—body panels that barely fit and powertrains that often won’t make it home from the dealer.

Today’s modern automotive designs are more precise, more sophisticated and more complex than any other time in history.

In the 1990s, Domestics were in danger of being left for dead. The Japanese introduced dynamic engineering, with an attention to fit and finish unknown in the automotive world before. The Europeans revolutionized serial data streams that made our traditional onboard computer systems seem antiquated and simplistic.

Well, once again, it’s good to be an American. Yankee ingenuity catapulted American car manufactures back into the lead. Detroit is now producing some of the finest automobiles in the world. The Cadillac CTS is World Class and the all-new CT6 promises to be even better, for example. The all-new Corvette Z06 is an engineering masterpiece as is the Dodge Hellcat and who could argue with the engineering brilliance of Ford Motor Company and their industry leading ECO BOOST engine family.

In a complete reversal, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen are now no longer ruling the industry and the Japanese imports are scrambling to stay abreast of their Korean counterparts. Honda and Toyota have had their share of automatic transmission woes and Nissan its own difficulties, too.

Every week on Horsepower for an Hour it is our privilege to preview some of the finest cars in the world.

We are pleased—and relieved—to see America out in front once again! We are the greatest nation on earth and we’re producing the greatest cars on earth once again.
