America seems to be infatuated with small SUV’s, everywhere you look you see them in growing numbers and here at horsepower Broadcasting, we have to confess, we have become enamored with them also. SUV’s and CUV’s have revitalized the automotive industry with truck type utility while maintaining the comfort of a sedan, combine that with great fuel economy and good looks and it’s easy to see why the platform is doing so well.
I remember years ago when I was a kid, the Asian imports were dominated by Toyota, Honda and Nissan (Datsun), they were essentially the Japanese big 3. Well, times are changing and there are a few different contenders in the Asian import world and one of them is Mazda. Although the brand may not necessarily be new, some of the fresh ideas they’ve come up with are extremely innovative.
The newest edition to an already impressive lineup is the all new 2016 Mazda CX-3 and it is not only utilitarian but quick, agile and responsive, it’s a performance hatchback that works exceptionally well.
Skyactiv Powertrain Technology
For us here at Horsepower Broadcasting the magic is with their Skyactiv Technology
. The 2.0 liter inline 4
cylinder is capable enough producing about 146 horsepower and the 6 speed electronically controlled transmission is well geared to the size and weight of the vehicle. The engine design is one of our favorites and the attention to detail is impressive, but skyactiv technology is so much more than just engine advancements. It includes body and chassis as well as steering refinements, see SkyActiv
for more information information.
Mazda CX-3 Interior
Inside, the cabin and interior are equally impressive, there’s ample seating and the cargo area is plenty spacious. The console and dash are well laid out and instrumentation is easy to locate and unobstructed. The CX-3 Touring edition with all wheel drive starts at about $23,250 and it is probably the best bang for the buck. As far as technology is concerned, the standard rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and the Mazda Connect Infotainment system
are easy to use and the 7.0 inch color display is well placed and easy to view. The combination cloth and leather seats are well stitched and the leather wrap steering wheel is comfortable to grip.
What About Honda, Toyota and Kia
With all that being said, if you find yourself in the market for a small crossover and are looking for other comparable models, one worthy consideration is the all new 2015 Kia Sportage
. We have always been a fan of the Kia product, especially of late. Looking for something with a bit larger interior? Check out the all new 2015 Honda CR-V
or the 2015 Toyota RAV4.
Regardless of the make or model you choose, one thing seems certain, the small SUV is here for the duration. If ‘Fun to Drive’ is on your list of requirements you’ll not be disappointed with any of these models.
