Rick Merkow’s 1963 Ford Falcon (Old Lady)
Meet Rick Merkow
This is Rick Merkow’s 1963 Ford Falcon Futura which he affectionately refers to as “The Old Lady”. Here at Horsepower Broadcasting, we’ve known Rick for many years, and no one is more passionate about the Classic Car World than he is. We recently asked Rick about the little Falcon, this was his reply:
“Why do I care so much about a little old lady’s 4 door Falcon? Well, I included a photo of what it looked like when I found it in 2004. Not the car I was looking for to be honest. But this car sat parked for months with a “for sale” sign at the local gas station where I fill up quite often. And just out of curiosity, I would walk over to it and look it over from time to time. As the weeks passed, it just grew on me! As sorry and neglected as it looked, I couldn’t help notice that everything was there. As if time was the only element that had any impact on it’s condition. So I caved in and brought it home. It really didn’t need a major restore. Just some tinkering here and there. It’s bullet proof inline 6 just needed everything around it fresh and new. The 2 speed Ford O Matic transmission had apparently been rebuilt by one of the previous owners (I’m the 3rd) and works just fine. Very little rust on this California to sort out. Exterior and interior work and this is what you see. The car comes with it’s original owners manual. The dealer license plate frame from “Glendale Motors” is still on the back. And to tell you the truth, if I had not brought this poor old dog home, who knows what would have happened to it.
Back in 1963, the Ford Falcon Futura 4 door model was an upscale trim package designed for the small family who wanted good fuel economy. More than fifty years have now passed and it’s still as cool today as it was then. I call her “The Old Lady”…
